🏢 Client: Private Estate Owner (Long-standing Client)
🔎 Summary
A client approached us seeking to clearly define the edge of their driveway at the entrance to their property. After considering various options, the client selected hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) as the hedging material. Hornbeam was chosen for its unique characteristic of retaining its leaves through the winter months—even though the foliage turns brown in autumn, a significant proportion remains on the branches, providing year-round screening and windbreak benefits. This feature also offers valuable shelter and habitat potential for local wildlife, which becomes increasingly beneficial as the hedge matures. Hornbeam is a robust and resilient plant, well-suited to withstand the particularly windy conditions along the driveway.
🎯 Objectives
The primary objective was to clearly define the edge of the client’s driveway at the property entrance with an attractive, living boundary.
🛠️ Project Execution
To ensure the long-term health and stability of the hedge, we opted for a trench-style planting system. This approach was particularly suited to the site’s softer soils, as it allows the root systems of individual plants to interlock over time. As the hedge establishes, this interconnected root network helps the hedge function as a single, stable unit rather than a series of separate plants, improving resilience against wind and environmental stress.
The project began with careful site preparation, marking out the line of the new hedge along the driveway entrance. A continuous trench was excavated to the appropriate depth and width to accommodate the hornbeam plants (80-90cm). The potted plants were then positioned at regular intervals within the trench, ensuring even spacing for optimal growth and density. The soil was backfilled and gently firmed around the roots to eliminate air pockets while avoiding excessive compaction, which could hinder root development. The hedge was thoroughly watered in, and a light mulch was applied to help retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.
âś… Outcome & Evaluation
The entire installation was completed efficiently over two days. The trench planting method facilitated rapid progress and ensured consistent establishment conditions for all plants. The client was provided with aftercare guidance to support the hedge through its initial establishment phase.
As a result, the new hornbeam hedge now provides a well-defined, attractive boundary to the driveway entrance. Hornbeams naturally provide privacy and wind protection throughout the year, while also enhancing the property’s biodiversity by offering shelter and resources for wildlife. The project was delivered on time and to the client’s satisfaction, demonstrating the effectiveness of careful species selection and professional planting techniques.
